Now that you know what the Warm Home Discount is, here’s how it reaches your bill — and what to check so you don’t miss it.
Most of it happens automatically, but a few details are worth knowing.
👀 Who can get it
For winter 2026 to 2027, eligibility is based on your situation on 23 August 2026.
In England and Wales, you or your partner needed to get Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related ESA or Pension Credit on that date.
⚠️ Watch this one: the name on the electricity bill must be yours or your partner’s.
📋 Important rules
Your electricity supplier has to be part of the scheme. Most large suppliers are, but it’s worth checking with yours.
The discount goes on the electricity bill. If the same company supplies your gas too, you may be able to have it on the gas bill instead.
It is never paid out as cash. Anyone offering to “send you the money” is not part of the scheme.
🧾 What to have ready
You don’t usually need any documents for the discount to be applied.
Still, it helps to have your latest electricity bill to hand, so you can check whose name is on the account.
If you receive a letter about the scheme, keep it — it tells you exactly what to do next.
⚙️ How it’s applied
In England and Wales, eligible households usually get the discount automatically through data matching between the government and suppliers.
Some people receive a letter asking them to confirm details by phone. If yours does, follow it by the date it gives.
In Scotland, some households get it automatically, and others apply directly to their electricity supplier, which may set extra rules.

The scheme reopens each autumn. For this winter, GOV.UK says it reopens in October 2026.
The discount is applied during the winter months, so it may appear on a bill a little later than you expect.
If you think you qualify and nothing has happened by the new year, contact your supplier.
📲 Prepayment meters
You can still get the discount with a prepayment or pay-as-you-go meter.
Your supplier will tell you how it arrives — for example, as a voucher to top up your meter, or as credit on a smart meter.
Keep an eye on post and emails from your supplier during the winter, so a voucher doesn’t go unused.
⚠️ Common mistakes
The bill is in someone else’s name, so the discount can’t be matched to you.
A letter arrives, gets put aside, and the step it asks for is never done.
Paying a website or caller to “apply for you” — the discount is free and comes only through your supplier.
🧠 Good to know
If you changed supplier or moved home after 23 August, the discount usually stays linked to the supplier you had on that date.
Living in Northern Ireland? The Warm Home Discount doesn’t apply there — GOV.UK points to the Affordable Warmth scheme instead.
If you live in a park home, there is a separate Park Homes Warm Home Discount application, also explained on GOV.UK.
And if anything about your account has changed since the summer, a quick call to your supplier is the simplest way to check where you stand.
